The most common questions we're asked are "when are you going to bring out a new game?" or "when are you going to add new features to the current game?"
Obviously we'd love nothing more than to be constantly bringing out new updates that add exciting new features to the game. But as a small independent software team, it's a full-time job just keeping the current game working smoothly across all the different combinations of phones, tablets and platforms.
Operating systems and devices change all the time, and as a developer you need to constantly carry out important but unseen technical improvements to make sure your game carries on functioning properly.
Every time Apple or Google bring out new OS updates, or a new device is launched, that can mean a whole load of work just to ensure the app is compatible.
For instance we've just spent the last 6-12 months updating all the underlying software of the game, and setting up and launching a new server for the saved games.
Those were huge jobs that took a large amount of planning, hard work, and testing; yet they didn't add a single new feature to the game!
It's frustrating, because we can appreciate that to the end users, it might look like the game isn't being developed, when in reality we're still spending all day every day working on it.
The other issue regarding updates is that unfortunately it would be very difficult at this stage to add major new features to the current app, for a few reasons.
Firstly, anything major would almost certainly require a change to the game database itself. That would be a huge job that could potentially cause major problems for everyone who's in the middle of playing the game.
If we changed the database structure, we'd somehow need to make sure those changes were compatible with millions of existing games. One tiny glitch could render all those games unplayable.
Even for a large software company with loads of developers and testers, that would be an enormous headache. But for a small indie company it's the stuff of nightmares!
But secondly the current game is now over 5 years old, and the software used to create it is becoming increasingly outdated. So to create a game that's going to last for another 5 years, we'd really need to rebuild a lot of things from scratch in the form of a brand new game.
Hopefully, now that the latest technical updates to the game and the servers are almost complete, we'll be able to find some time to focus on all the plans we've got for a new version of Football Chairman.
Over the years we've had great feedback and suggestions from you all about features you'd like to see added, and we'd love to take all that feedback and use it to create a bigger and better game.
Fingers crossed we find the time to do it!
