In Football Chairman Pro, for the first time, we introduced the option to leave your current club and take over a different one. This was something that many people had requested and it has gone on to become an extremely popular feature in the game.
However, like every other aspect of the game, we had to take an extremely complex set of real-life circumstances and convert them into simplified, user-friendly gameplay.
In real life, if you were the owner of a football club, the process of selling one club and taking over another would take many months; probably even years. First of all you would have to find a buyer for your current club, and then negotiate a deal to sell it.
After that, you would have to find another club to buy - possibly spending a few years out of game while you wait for the right club at the right price. Then when you do find another club, there would be a whole load of negotiations and legal work before you can finally take control.
All of which wouldn't exactly translate into the fast-paced gameplay that Football Chairman is known for. So we decided to simplify the whole system down as far as possible.
In the game, at the end of each season you can choose from a few clubs who are up for sale at various prices. If you want to take one of them over, you just need enough money in your current club's bank account – and then you get to keep the rest of your club's remaining cash to spend at your new team.
Obviously this isn't how it happens in real life. But we chose this system for two reasons:
1, To keep the gameplay as fast and simple as possible.
2, To make it fair to anyone who had spent real-life money on in-app investments.
Regarding point #2, imagine for instance somebody in charge of a non-league club had just bought a £50m investment. That's a lot more than their club would be worth, so if they changed club, they might lose their investment, which would lead to a lot of complaints.
So in the end we decided that it would be simpler all round to let people keep their current club's bank balance.
We appreciate that this isn't a perfect solution and in future, if we build a new version of the game, this is definitely something we'll revisit. We're always trying to find ways to add more depth and realism to the game without taking away from the fast pace of the gameplay.
So thanks to anyone who has given us their feedback about this feature – we'll definitely be bearing all your comments in mind!
